About Acupuncture

Does Acupuncture Work?

Yes! I have a background rooted in western medicine, pharmacology, behavior sciences and have complete confidence that no other comprehensive, professional medicine would have last for thousands of years if it did not work.  Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM)  is practiced on nearly every continent and has safely and successfully treated everything from pain to digestive disorders, stress and sleep conditions to autoimmune disease and common colds. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a professional medicine that has ‘standards of care’, a medical treatment guideline that specifies appropriate treatment based on scientific evidence and collaboration between the top professionals in the field.

Unlike western medicine that treats disease, often with pharmaceuticals or invasive procedures, acupuncture treats patterns or the root of the disease. The major benefit in receiving acupuncture verses taking pharmaceuticals or surgery is that there are little to no negative side effects from acupuncture, only improvement in health.  Pharmaceuticals are very strong and sometimes absolutely necessary, but when ingested your body can become imbalanced. Your body is an extremely complex and intelligent system that always seeks balance, acupuncture helps facilitate this.

How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of single-use, sterile, extremely thin solid needles at specific points on the body and may include twirling or other stimulation of the needles while in place. Pain or disease of tissues generally involves restriction of blood flow through the unhealthy tissue or organ, which starves the tissue, organ, or gland of nutrients, resulting in impaired metabolism.

The acupuncture points, when inserted with a needle, stimulates a nerve impulse to the central nervous system, which relays the impulse to the region of the body that needs therapeutic attention.  Needling generates a parasympathetic (rest and digest) neurological response. In other words, it causes the whole system to lose tension and relax deeply. This is what allows the body to heal itself.

Specific points stimulate an increase of flow of blood to and from the unhealthy area. Increased blood flow brings in oxygen and nutrients while removing waste products of metabolism.  Increased oxygen supply allows the unhealthy tissues to “breathe” and generate energy (“qi”, pronounced “chee” or in Japan, called “ki” pronounced “key”), increased nutrient supply allows repairs to take place, and removal of toxins, reverses inflammatory processes that damage tissues, organs and glands.  In short, therapeutic needling works by inducing a relaxation response and increasing the flow of fresh, oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to starved tissues, organs, and glands.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Acupuncture treatments have a more subtle and cumulative effect.  Treatments will often be more frequent in the beginning in order to build up momentum in the body in order for the healing process to start.  Once this momentum is built up and your condition improves you may come in less often.  The frequency of treatments is also based on the condition being treated, how long you have had this condition and how compliant you are with your treatment plan. Acupuncture sessions last approximately 45-60 minutes.  Your first appointment will take 90 minutes.  Generally, for chronic conditions you will need 10-12 treatments and for an acute condition around 6 treatments. You will often notice changes in your overall health, sleep, digestion and stress within 1-2 treatments.  Patients have also experienced significant improvement with just one treatment; every individual is unique and responds differently.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

No, but you do feel it. Unlike hypodermic needles, acupuncture needles are solid and hair-thin, not designed to cut the skin making it painless.  While each person experiences acupuncture differently, most people feel only minimal sensation as the needles are inserted. Some people report a tingling, warming, heavy or achy sensation. After the needles are inserted, most patients feel very relaxed and often fall asleep. At ‘Wise’, we use very thin, sterile, single-use disposable needles approved by the FDA.

What should I expect at my first visit to Wise Acupuncture?

At Wise we typically ask about your condition and symptoms, give an examination focusing on feeling your pulse in three different positions on both wrists and evaluating the color, texture and other aspects of the tongue. Feeling the pulse and evaluating the different aspects of the tongue is like an X-ray into the body allowing the practitioner to understand what specifically is causing the imbalance in your body and allowing for a more accurate diagnosis.

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, sometimes referred to as “acupuncture facelift,” is a wonderful timeless beauty technique used by the Chinese since the Sung Dynasty (960-1279AD). In Chinese, it is called “Me Rong Zhen”. Cosmetic acupuncture was performed on the Empress and Emperor’s concubines. Today, it is an effective non-surgical yet painless way to lessen the appearance of fine lines as well as deeper wrinkles. According to Chinese medicine, it improves circulation and stimulates the body’s natural anti-aging powers.

How does it work?

Sterile, hair-thin, single use needles are gently inserted into specific points on the face to facilitate the movement of blood and stimulate the production of collagen. This nourishes, re-hydrates, tones and reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles. Your skin will also have a more youthful glow.
Natural Chinese herbal creams are applied for a soothing herbal facial, by our Aveda trained esthetician Nancy Weirick, after the acupuncture treatment.  In advanced facial acupuncture, synergistic points are used on the arms, legs and body to further strengthen the body’s energy, thereby enhancing beauty from the inside out. With this complete whole body treatment, we can achieve a balance between improving exterior facial beauty and strengthening the internal energy that influences beauty.
Treatments improve muscle tone and dermal contraction, increase collagen production, tightens pores, and increases local circulation of blood and lymph around the face. It can be used to reduce a double chin and sagging jowls, help to decrease inflammation, puffy or droopy eyelids.

How many sessions before noticing improvement?

A complete course of treatment is 10 to 12 sessions, 1 to 3 sessions a week. The measure of improvement depends on the individual. Factors such as diet, exercise and lifestyle also contribute to the effectiveness of the treatments. Noticeable results are usually achieved after 6 to 8 sessions. A session takes about 60 minutes. We will also recommend herbal supplements as well as diet and lifestyle changes in order to solidify the effectiveness of the treatments.

The treatment involves a combination of acupuncture (face, scalp and body), facial Tui Na (massage), Gua sha, and a complete herbal facial regimen.  Using formulas based on thousands of years of Traditional Chinese Medicine combined with modern technical research, our products are unparalleled in their skin rejuvenation and anti-aging properties. Our products use 100% natural ingredients that are not tested on animals, have no harmful ingredients, no artificial fragrances or dyes, and are paraben-free.

Acupuncture Infertility Package
Acupuncture Infertility Package

The Acupuncture Infertility Package is recommended for anyone trying to get pregnant or preparing for a future pregnancy. Acupuncture and herbs help infertility due to many causes.  It is suggested to receive treatment once per week for 3 months to regulate hormones and other gynecological issues or if receiving IVF treatments.

Acupuncture and herbs increase your chance of IVF by 40-60%.  It is recommended to receive acupuncture and herbs 3 months prior to IVF.  Acupuncture and herbs improve ovarian function and allow the development of better quality eggs and strong, healthy embryos.  Acupuncture thickens the lining and increases blood flow to the uterus which helps promote follicular development and implantation of the embryo.

Before and after the transfer of the embryos acupuncture and herbs can help reduce uterine contractions thus helping the embryo implantation and reduce the risk of miscarriage.

The Acupuncture Infertility Package is highly recommended, however, if you have only a few weeks before implantation acupuncture can still be effective.  Contact Wise Acupuncture with any questions you may have or if you would like further information.
